A strong first 40 minutes from the Canowindra Tigers gave Woodbridge Cup ladder leaders Trundle a scare on Sunday, but the Boomers piled on 32 points after the break to inflict a ninth season loss to the visitors.

The Tigers flew out of the boxes and led 10-6 late in the opening half, displaying tough defence and a bit of attacking flair with the ball in hand.

But a Boomers try before the break gave the home side momentum, with the score locked at 10-all at halftime.

From the restart, Canowindra conceded a hat-trick of converted tries as Trundle took a 28-10 lead at the hour mark.

The Tigers responded soon after with a try to Waisele Ratudina to reduce the margin to 14 points but the Boomers raced away with it in the closing stages to record a 42-14 round 17 Woodbridge Cup victory.

“The boys didn’t have enough ball in the second-half. They gave away penalties and piggy-backed them up field and became tired in defence,” coach Barry Traves said.

“Repeated [defensive] sets hurt us. That’s why there was a blowout in the score. A couple of opportunities went astray.

“It was a competitive day of football.”

Three points was awarded to Waisele Ratudina, two went to Brydon Hughes and Alex Willson picked up one point.

The result leaves Canowindra in eighth on the competition ladder with one round remaining, while the Boomers’ cling to the minor premiership, one point ahead of Manildra.

They’ll look to secure the minor piece of silverware at Grenfell on Saturday, while Canowindra finishes its season off against the Eugowra Golden Eagles at Canowindra’s Tom Clyburn Oval.

Meanwhile both the lower grades went down at Trundle.

The girls’ league tag lost to Manildra 32-0 and the youth league were beat 26-8.

All grades will be in action on Saturday.
