Two drivers were caught doing 170 kmh on the Bass Highway at Westbury on December 8, police said. One of the drivers only held a provisional licence. Police said the two drivers had lost their licences for at least four months, their vehicles were clamped and they were each fined $1100. "Whilst the officers were dealing with those drivers, two motor cyclists passed by at similar excessive speeds," police said. Senior Constable Chris Rockliff said: "Such excessive speed on a major highway, in peak hour Friday afternoon traffic, is outright dangerous to all road users and could very easily result in a fatal crash." "In the lead-up to Christmas, into the new year, police will be focusing on such high-risk driving, anywhere, any time." Police said the incident was at about 4.20pm. They said police motor cyclists detected a Black Ford Falcon being driven by a provisional licence holder doing 170 kmh, closely followed by a white Toyota Hilux. They were intercepted and the vehicles clamped for 28 days. "Members of the community are encouraged to report dangerous driving at the time by calling 131444 and those with footage can upload their videos for follow-up by police via the link on the Tasmania Police website," Senior Constable Rockliff said. Police asked anyone who saw the vehicles from the Westbury incident or with information that could help identify two Suzuki motor cycles police saw speeding to contact them on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or online at crimestopperstas.com.au
