Richard Payten - originally from Canowindra and a Oscar winner himself - is an Executive producer for the project.
The film is a mystery drama about a couple whose lives unravel after their two teenage children go missing in the harsh Australian desert.
The film, financed by Screen Australia, is written by Fiona Seres and Michael Kinirons.
"Kim Farrant's Strangerland has an incredible cast ... a strong creative vision and massive A-list festival potential, Screen Australia's Chief Executive Ruth Harley said.
Strangerland is one of six feature films to receive part of Screen Australia's latest funding announcement.
The other productions to share in the $5.4 million investment are Last Cab to Darwin from director Jeremy Sims, Backyard Ashes, Force of Destiny, Maya the Bee Movie, and Women He's Undressed.
