After the huge success of the 2017 Western Challenge league tag carnival, Woodbridge Cup boss Andrew Pull is anticipating this year’s edition to be bigger and better.

Nominations have began trickling in for the 2018 carnival, with Canowindra Tigers, Cargo Blue Heelers, Eugowra Golden Eagles and Orange CYMS officially the only entries.

Two-time reigning champions St Pat’s are expected to defend their title at Canowindra’s Tom Clyburn Oval.

Having won the past two titles to sit along side the club’s maiden triumph in 2012, St Pat’s will look to win a fourth title in 2018.

Pull believes the event has been growing each year since the inaugural event in 2011 and he doesn’t see a reason why that trend won’t continue in 2018.

“We had 20 teams last year and 17 teams the year before. It’s pretty popular,” he said.

“St Pat’s are expected to be back this year. I was speaking to [coach] Mick Armstrong and he’s a big believer in this event and doesn’t want to miss it.

“Lithgow normally come and they always put in a good challenge.”

Bathurst Panthers have previously not entered the competition, while Cowra is another Group 10 club that traditionally misses the carnival.

Pull was hoping both would be in attendance for the carnival, which this year will be staged on Sunday, March 11.

Pull said free entry usually attracts a good crowd.

“There’s plenty of good athletes out there and they’re very skillful,” he said.

“Some girls are even better than the men.”

Nomination fees are $100 per team and closing date for nominations is on February 25, 2018.

Alongside the dominant St Pat’s girls, previous winners of the competition include Canowindra (2011), Orange Hawks (2013) and Orange CYMS (2014 and 2015).
