Michael Harrison was named Canowindra’s Citizen of the Year at an evening awards ceremony at Morris Park on Friday.

Mr Harrison has been a member of the Canowindra RSL sub branch for about 10 years and will enter his eighth year as president if re-elected in 2018.
A summary of his contribution to the community said: “He has organised the ANZAC and Remembrance Day ceremonies, including liaising with schools in town to have students attend and help run the services and cook breakfast after the dawn service. He involves the youth of Canowindra in order to gain a better understanding and respect for our ex-service men and women.”
Mr Harrison said he was “very grateful”.
“What an honour it is today [Australia Day] to receive the Citizen of the Year award. Firstly I’d like to thank the person that nominated me, I feel very grateful as there are very worthy people in this town of Canowindra,” Mr Harrison said.
“The hard work and commitment of so many people makes Canowindra the wonderful place it is.
“I’m happy to be able to contribute to the community for so many years.”

Member for Calare Andrew Gee, Canowindra’s Australia Day special guest, announced Mr Harrison as the Citizen of the Year.
“That’s a very important thing you’ve undertaken, Mike,” Andrew Gee said.
Mr Harrison finished his speech by saying he’s proud to be a citizen of Australia, and proud to call Canowindra “my home”.
