Five Canowindra Tigresses represented Woodbridge Cup in the inaugural round of the Western Women’s Rugby League Championships in Dunedoo on Sunday.

Despite the side’s 36-0 loss to opponents Castlereagh, it was still a massive day for Tigresses Keira Whatman, Kristy White, Monique Jenart, Simone Middleton and Lisa Burke who were all members of Woodbridge Cup’s first ever women’s rugby league side.

Under 18s Canowindra player Paige Selton was absent from Woodbridge Cup’s under 18s victory.

A sizeable crowd packed Dunedoo’s Robertson Oval to witness the historic opening round.

In the end the Greg Larkin-coached Castlereagh League outfit ran out 36-0 winners and looked like they had been playing together for some time.

The game opened at a cracking pace and Channy Burgess grabbed two tries while Tori Canham scored one and kicked three goals to give Castlereagh an 18-0 lead at the halftime break.

but it was to be Castlereagh’s front rower Channy Burgess who was to open the scoring after seven minutes when she crashed over under the posts.

The second half opened with some spirited attack from the Woodbridge girls but they were to be denied by some equally resilient Castlereagh defence.

In the seventh minute the Cougars worked the ball downfield and on the back of another strong charge from Burgess, Canham dived over from dummy half to take the score out to 24-0.

At this stage the game was probably out of the reach of the Woodbridge combination but they most certainly did not throw in the towel and the game continued to provide great viewing.

Castlereagh again scored through a try, this time to the their fullback Maria Nagy with fifteen minutes remaining, and then Burgess once again proved to be too powerful as she powered over late in the game.

With Canham steering yet another conversion over, the Castlereagh defended a last gasp attack from Woodbridge to run out 36-0 winners

This week Woodbridge Cup take on Group Ten at Grenfell on Sunday, March 4.

Under 18s play at 2pm following the first grade game which is scheduled for 3pm start.
