The words “Fag” and “Dykes” were written on the footpath in Gaskill Street .
“Last night Oxford St in Sydney was filled with hundreds of thousands celebrating the 40th anniversary of Mardis Gras. This morning on Gaskill St in Canowindra, NSW, locals walked over hateful, disrespectful words spray painted on to our historic main street,” one Canowindra resident said.
“Statistics showed it was an overwhelming yes from our electorate for the Marriage Equality vote, a fact I am very proud of however this is a sad reminder that a change of laws does not change a culture of hate and homophobia which is all too often seen in small towns.
“Lucky for us, this is a rarity in Canowindra and many locals have already tried to remove the graffiti themselves and have expressed their utter disgust in this individual/group’s actions.
Reactions on social media included “This is not what our town thinks, someone needs to grow their minds! This is 2018!”
