Councillors, Council staff and Merriganowry locals attended the unveiling near the property entrance to ‘Eurimbla’, owned by Craig and Jenny Lamond, which overlooks the area that was once used as a supply depot for the expedition.
Guarded by the detachment of the 46th Regiment for several months, the depot was the first semi-permanent European settlement on the Lachlan River and became known as Soldiers Flat.
“On behalf of my Councillor colleagues and the staff at Cowra Council, I must extend a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who have generously given their time organising and participating in today’s activities,” Cr West said.
“I’d like to particularly thank Craig and Jenny (Lamond) for their kind donation of the land on which the sign sits.
“Your contribution to this project is much appreciated and will no doubt assist in raising public awareness of the importance of conserving and protecting our special heritage places,” Cr West said.
