A Canowindra man charged with break and enter was jailed for 12 months, with the sentence fully suspended on the condition he enter into a bond, when he appeared in Cowra Local Court on April 4.

Norton Thurtell, 25, of Lawrence’s Lane in Canowindra, was told that if he re-offended during the next 12 months he could expect to serve a period of full time custody.
Thurtell was found guilty breaking in to a farm house on Keys Road in Canowindra sometime between 5.15pm on Monday, December 14, 2015 and 8.30am on Tuesday, December 15, 2015, following a hearing and was back in court last week for sentencing.
Thurtell was charged with the offence on September 26 last year after undergoing a swab for DNA evidence.
His legal representative, Mr Clive Hill, told the court while his client has a long history of driving matters and “drunken assaults, which have petered out, he has now settled down, put his shoulder to the wheel”.
Thurtell was placed on an intensive corrections order prior to his latest court appearance with magistrate Michael O’Brien noting that he had been complying with the order.
“The redeeming feature is that this offence pre-dates your intensive corrections order put in place and your response to that has been satisfactory.
“Items that ought not be out in the public have found their way to parts unknown.
“If you do come out here again you’ll be your own jailer,” Mr O’Brien told Thurtell.
A gun cabinet in the house was forced open and three rifles, two rifle scopes, three gun bags containing ammunition, a scroll saw, 12 bottles of red wine and two suit cases were stolen.
His DNA was found on a gemmy bar left on the floor of the house.
