Tigers cubs still in it despite major semi-final loss

Canowindra’s youth league side will rely on its second chance this weekend to secure a place in the Woodbridge Cup junior competition’s grand final.

Tigers went down to Manildra Rhinos 26-18 in the major semi-final in cold and windy conditions on Sunday at Trundle.

The result means the Tigers meet Trundle on Sunday at Grenfell with the winner progressing to the decider against the Rhinos at Manildra on September 2.

On Sunday, the Tigers started strong but conceded first points after being gifting the Rhinos up the field with a penalty.

The Tigers quickly leveled it 6-6 thanks to a Frazer Ryder try which Zac Lees converted after 25 minutes into the contest. Penalties again gifted the Rhinos favourable field territory and they converted it into points to edge ahead 10-6.

Four minutes before the break, Tigers’ Angus Fisher barged over the line and Lees gave the Tigers a 12-10 lead at halftime. From the restart, the Rhinos scored three tries to race away with a 26-12 lead.

The Tigers scored through Ryder again late to keep their hopes alive but the Rhinos held on for an eight point win. The Rhinos sew up a spot in the grand final, while the Tigers will need to beat Trundle on Sunday in the qualifying final at Grenfell to keep their premiership hopes alive.
