Sudden death at Risdon Prison ‘not considered suspicious’

A 55-year-old man died at Risdon Prison on Monday night, but police have said the death is not believed to be suspicious.

Tasmania Police attended the prison, with initial investigations indicating the death was not considered suspicious.

A forensic pathologist and the Coroner also attended and reviewed the scene with police.

Director of Prisons Ian Thomas said he extends his sincere condolences to the deceased’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“The Department of Justice will not be making any further comment as the matter will be the subject of an examination by the Coroner,” he said.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
