Canowindra firefighter David Cullane OAM has again been recognised with a national honour as the recipient of an Australian Fire Service Medal in the Queen's Birthday honours list.

Mr Cullane was honoured for his dedication and committed service provided to the Rural Fire Service, Rivers, Canowindra and Cowra communities over the past 70 years.
Joining the Rivers Brigade in the Cowra Fire District in 1951, he has held the positions of Brigade President, Deputy Captain, Captain and Group Captain.
In 1984, Mr Cullane was elected Group Captain. This position was held concurrently with the position of Brigade Captain of Rivers. During his time as Group Captain, he managed five brigades in the Rivers Group.
One of his duties in the pre-season included ensuring his group of brigades had all equipment inspected and operational in time for the fire season.
He attended as a volunteer representative to the Bush Fire Management Committee, Senior Management Committee, and Liaison Committee to assist with zoning. His invaluable knowledge of the community was pivotal in the success of this project.
When the Bush Fires Act 1949 was replaced by the Rural Fires Act 1997, Mr Cullane was actively involved with disseminating the changes to local farmers and the community to ensure compliance across the service. He was instrumental in providing information and training to key stakeholders.
He continues to be an active member of the Brigade, holding the Brigade President role for more than 10 years.
His involvements sees him continue to arrange training at a brigade level.
He also assists the District with organising further training for the brigades.
Described as very approachable and well respected, Mr Cullane's expertise continues to be sought at a NSW RFS, community and Brigade level.
He is community centric and devoted to the NSW RFS, having secured the Rivers Brigade's future by generously donating land for the Rivers Brigade Station.
Mr Cullane received an Order of Australian Medal in 1998 for his dedication and service to the Cowra and Canowindra districts, through river and farm management initiatives and the Rivers Brigade.
He also received the National Medal, National Medal - First Clasp, National Medal - Second Clasp and National Medal - Third Clasp in 2001.
