On September 12, Walkathon participants, many with walkers or in wheelchairs, completed 10 laps around the Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre, joining hundreds of others across Australia to walk and raise money for disadvantaged communities both locally and internationally.
"All participants dressed for the occasion and everyone was bedazzled by the slash of red that was seen everywhere throughout the gardens," Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre Manager, Dianne Cameron said.
The Moyne Aged Care Plus Walkathon raised $861.20, which contributed to the more than $65,000 which has been raised so far across Aged Care Plus Centres in NSW, ACT and Qld. Donations are still being accepted and can be made at: agedcareplus.salvos.org.au/donate.
"Seeing residents in their 80s, 90s and beyond, walking the distance to help fight poverty and injustice is inspiring to say the least!" Ms Cameron said.
"Everyone really felt good about making a difference, going for a stroll and enjoying a lovely BBQ lunch afterwards. We are so thankful to our residents and staff and all those from the community who came along to support our Walkathon."
The funds raised will have a big impact on drought affected farmers in the outback of south Queensland and northern New South Wales, as well as giving a beach holiday this summer to disadvantaged children from indigenous communities of far north western Queensland. The Walkathon has also enabled Aged Care Plus to support a womens community empowerment program in North India.
