Preparing to walk 60 kilometres through Sydney over one weekend in November, Team Canowindra have committed to raising more than $24,000 to support cancer research and treatment at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
Team member Sasha McKenzie will participate in the event for the second time, having marked a very special anniversary in 2014.
“Last year at the time of the walk it was the first anniversary of my auntie’s death and this will be the second,” she said.
“Every one of us in the team though does have a personal motivation, particularly as we’re nearly all medical people, we’ve known so many people affected by cancer and we’re also doing it for our daughters.”
Ms McKenzie also stressed the importance of the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse for local people.
“People from here do get the benefit, patients from here do go down there to receive treatment and just yesterday the centre opened so that people can stay overnight after having their treatment which will make it even easier for local people receiving treatment,” she said.
As part of the ‘Weekend to End Women’s Cancers,’ conditions, for every team member, $2000 must be raised. While they only began one month ago, Team Canowindra has already inched over the $2000 mark and is looking to raise more funds at a trivia night on Saturday, March 14.
With a ‘come as your favourite superhero’ theme, the evening is shaping up to a fun night out with friends for a good cause.
“There’ll be lots of prizes, there’s still tables available and if we can get 150 people that would be great,” Sasha said.
“We’re hoping to have school kids design posters for the trivia night with superheroes and what they think makes a person a superhero and we’ll try and auction them off to raise more funds.”
Tickets are $10 each and are available from the Canowindra Swimming Pool and Billy Paul’s Carpet Centre.
The evening will kick off at 6pm for a 6.30 start at the Canowindra Services Club.
While the trivia night is the first major fundraiser, hats are also avaliable for purchase at Saffi’s, with all funds to go to the cause. Baseball caps are $10, while bucket hats are $15.
With the Balloon Glow markets just around the corner, Ms McKenzie said Team Canowindra is hoping to have a fundraising stall. In the meantime, the team will be hard to miss around town as they enter training mode.
“We’ve just had out bright, hot pink shirts arrive with the pool as our naming sponsor and the Canowindra Taxi as out hat sponsor,” she said.
“We’d also like to thank Andrew Phelan who will be training us and volunteering at the event.”
Ms McKenzie also thanked Lisa Cartwright at the Canowindra Pool for her help in moving the team’s fundraising efforts forward.
“Lisa she has been an amazing help to us. She’s been fantastic doing everything she can to get sponsors for us and it’s been very much appreciated, ”she said.
Margaret and Ian Duguid, Renee and Adam Sunderland, Gary and Amanda Murphy, Sasha McKenzie, Anne Marie Rice, Ann Jones, Rhonda Burnett, Rebecca Phelan and Kristy Blakley are the team members taking on the challenge.
