On Sunday night, Hinch's ex-partner Natasha Chadwick claimed the newly-elected Senator was "back on the booze" five years after his life-saving liver transplant.

"Derryn Hinch has been back on booze 12+ months. So much for respecting organ donor's gift of life. Fave wine, cheap Gossips. No loyalty," Ms Chadwick tweeted.

Her tweet was later removed. She said: "Deleted tweets bcos not my style, in anger I stooped to his low-life antics. All tweets were true. Erasing Hinch from my life."

Following his former partner's social media outburst, Hinch issued a statement on Monday night,  admitting he sometimes drank watered-down wine.

"It is true that, even though the Senate dining room and the Hyatt Canberra now stock my Edenvale non-alcoholic wine, I have been known to occasionally drink real wine with the permission of the transplant surgeon Professor Bob Jones," the statement said.

"I know vineyard owners, like I used to be, will recoil at the news that that glass of red or white is diluted with water.

"I also drink Cooper's Ultra Light 'beer'. Check it out. It is alcohol free. I am not stupid."

The donor's mother, Lynda Gardner, told Channel 7 she had no hard feelings towards Hinch and did not regret that he received her son's liver.

"I think he'd have a good think about himself and what he needs to do," she said.

"I don't regret our decision to make the donation and that he got my son's liver."

In his statement, Senator Hinch went on to say he had interviewed Alex Best, whose husband - the soccer great George Best - had "jumped the queue for a liver transplant" after years of heavy drinking. Best was arrested for drink driving 18 months after his life-saving operation and was dead within two years.

"I have so much to achieve in the Senate, I won't be making that mistake," he says.

"I'm sorry that a break-up has led to this, but that's life."

After a battle with cancer, Senator Hinch was given a "life-saving" liver transplant in 2011.

In an interview on radio station 3AW on Tuesday morning, Senator Hinch said his relationship with Ms Chadwick ended on Sunday after she became upset that he was opening the Australian Transplant Games, an international sporting event for organ donors and recipients.

He said she was with him in Canberra when he delivered his maiden speech, and she was "shocked" that after the speech he had a light beer.

"Now I'll tell you, I have had a drink, I drink watered down wine, last Christmas I had a glass of Grange, which I watered down," he said.

"Once or twice a week I'd have a glass. It'd be one full glass over three glasses if you add the water and stuff."

He later told reporters Ms Chadwick had vowed to "get him" following their breakup.

"Hell hath no fury ... so welcome Derryn to the world of bunny boilers I spose," he said.

However, Ms Chadwick told Sky News the former radio shock jock was downplaying his drinking.

"He's watering down his comments in the press more than he his watering down his wine. He is drinking more than what he is telling the media today," she said.

Senator Hinch also responded to criticism over his comments at a public forum in 2008 where he said even if he received a titanium liver he would never drink again.

"Yep I did say that, and I have, I have had a drink since then so that's quite true," he said. "And I won't say I never will again."

He said he called Ms Gardner on Tuesday morning.

"I talked this morning to my donor's mother Lynda and she said 'I have faith in you Derryn' and she doesn't mind," he said.
