Investigations are expected to take two years to complete and will look at the feasibility and cost benefit of a new dam in the vicinity of Cranky Rock.
Ms Hodgkinson said stage two investigations will look at the best mix of infrastructure options for water security and flood mitigation in the Lachlan region.
"A reliable source of water is absolutely vital to support the growing towns and the food and fibre produced here," Ms Hodgkinson said.
She said all options are on the table, including pipeline linkages with existing infrastructure and the investigation involves a robust assessment.
