And the Bellerive Primary School isn't going to stop at young tackers bringing in candy canes, as it looks to ban kids from bringing in birthday cakes from next year.

Tasmania School Canteen Association CEO Julie Dunbabbin told 3AW on Friday morning lollies had no place in the classroom.

"There's scientific evidence now to show that when children have lollies the sugar levels in their blood are really high and they then behave differently," she said.

"I'm a teacher as well, I know when students have had an overload of lollies."

Tasmanian Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff put out a statement urging the school to show some common sense.

"Christmas comes once a year as do children's birthdays, so while I appreciate the importance of a balanced healthy diet, I urge the school association to use some common sense and reconsider," Mr Rockliff said.

Megan Neeson from the WA School Canteen Association said it wouldn't be banning kids from bringing candy canes to school.

"It's not part of the recommendation as part of the Department of Educations food policy," she said.

"We see it an an extension of the lunch box, so it would be a decision for parents. It's not something will be telling schools to ban."

One parent posted on the school's Facebook page saying the canteen had "gone too far" banning candy canes.

"Kids are no longer allowed to enjoy a small treat like kiddies should," she wrote.

"A candy cane at Christmas time or a cupcake on a friend's birthday? These are things little ones look forward too!

"There is such a thing as being too pushy/obsessive on the whole healthy eating. We don't want our kids to turn and run away from it or feel like they need to hide away in order to have a treat."

Another parent joked the school would be banning the Easter Bunny next.

"He's not allowed," she wrote. "No more little Easter eggs?

"I remember a few teachers giving them out last year. I'm assuming then that the BPS functions, school fairs will not sell cakes and sweets either?"
