A woman has died and eight others injured in a horrific car crash near the Victorian town of Elmore on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the Northern Highway at Runnymede about 3.15pm where a 4WD and sedan collided.

The 4WD was towing a car on a tandem trailer when it veered into the wrong lane, killing a woman in the oncoming sedan and injuring a man and another female passenger.

The pair were transported to Bendigo hospital in a stable condition.

The driver of the 4WD was also hospitalised, an ambulance spokesperson said.

Children in the 4WD – a 15-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and a two-year-old boy – were taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

A Melbourne-based major collision investigation unit travelled to the Runnymede crash site on Friday.

The woman’s death brings the year’s Victorian road toll to 279, 36 more fatalities than at the same time last year.

The year will end with the highest number of road deaths since 2008.
