A group of public librarians, including Gosford City Council staff, visited country towns in NSW from November 5 - 8 as part of the 1,000km Biblio Turismo 2009 "Bat out of Hell" motorcycle tour.
Canowindra was the stop on Saturday, November 7.
Starting from Gosford, the 13 riders from around the state visited libraries in Singleton, Denman, Mudgee, Wellington, Dubbo, Parkes, Forbes, Canowindra, Blayney, Bathurst and Katoomba.
Council's Library Services Manager, Alan Flores, said that the four day event was a great way to break down the stereotype of librarians, as well as raising awareness about the great work public libraries do.
“With over 900,000 books lent out each year, Gosford City Council is one of the biggest public library service providers in the country," Mr Flores said.
The tour has been so successful, this was the fourth in as many years.
“The tour provides an opportunity for rural staff to exchange information and network with bigger libraries," Mr Flores said.
“Thirty to fifty per cent of NSW residents are library members, but the tour aims to encourage even more and for people to see libraries as 'cool' places".
“Casanova, Chairman Mao, Karl Marx, the Brothers Grimm, Benjamin Franklin and Batgirl are just some of the many well known people who were librarians.”
Librarians from Ballarat, Warringah, Parkes, Manly, Blacktown and Mona Vale will also be riding on the tour.
Tour participants pay for their own expenses and volunteer their time to promote the work that librarians do.
Mr Flores said a great time was had by all who participated and a big thank you to the public libraries that provided such a wonderful reception for the riders.
