The Council is offering a limited number of free micro-chipping and discount desexing vouchers, worth up to $100, next month to encourage responsible pet ownership.
The program will open in the first week of August to mark Local Government Week, which runs from 3-9 August 2015.
While many people are aware councils manage rates, roads and rubbish, the breadth and diversity of their work often goes unrecognised.
Encouraging responsible pet ownership and administering the Companion Animals Act is a cornerstone of Local Government in NSW.
Cabonne Mayor Michael Hayes said an estimated 100,000 cats and 80,000 dogs are euthanised in pounds and shelters around Australia each year and many were surrendered because financial circumstances prevented owners from having their pets desexed.
“Research has also shown desexed cats and dogs are less likely to roam, get into fights, be hit by cars or impounded,” he said.
Cr Hayes said Local Government Week was the perfect opportunity to highlight the issue and to give something back to the community to ensure dogs and cats were micro-chipped and registered.
“Desexing also means lifetime registration is cheaper,” he said.
Cr Hayes said the Cabonne promotion provided local support for the Federal Government’s recently announced war on feral cats.
“The government has started a five-year crusade against feral cats, which are wreaking havoc on endangered species across the nation. Cabonne is encouraging its pet owners to play a small, but crucial role, in helping to save our native fauna,” he said.
Pet owners will be limited to two free micro-chipping and discount desexing vouchers.
Council will provide $100 vouchers to desex a female dog, $50 for a male dog or female cat and $25 for a male cat.
To receive vouchers, pet owners must produce proof of residence within Cabonne, such as a driver’s licence or rates notice.
Vouchers will have an expiry date and desexing surgery will be undertaken at the Molong and Canowindra Veterinary Clinics.
Pet owners can take up the free micro-chipping and discount desexing offer by enquiring at Council’s Molong office or ringing 6392 3200 from Monday 3 August 2015.
With a limited number of vouchers available, residents with pets requiring micro-chipping or desexing should not hesitate.
