A severe storm on Monday night has left several Canowindra businesses with significant water and hail damage to their buildings.
Among them was the Canowindra Services Club, with major damage sustained to the roof of the building.
Water pressure proved to be too much for the ceiling, with the inside, front section collapsing at approximately 6.30pm on Monday night.
The collapse has left the Club with considerable water damage to the carpet and gaming machines.
With workers cleaning up the area, the full extent of the damage is yet to be fully assessed.
Grant Cummings manager of the Services Club says, “We hope to be operational within a few days but it will all depend on the amount of water damage”.
This is only one of the many businesses in Gaskill Street affected by the storm Monday night, with those towards the Park being impacted the most. Shop owners are now cleaning up the mess and repairing any damages to ensure they are back up and running as soon as possible.
Local businesses weren’t the only ones affected by the storm Monday night, as local resident Linda Guthrie says, “I haven’t seen a storm like this in years, the hail was the size of golf balls and the backyard was full of water”.
The storm also caused significant power outages on the outskirts of town from Toogong to Murga, leaving a number of people without power for up to five hours and a lot of roads covered with tree limbs.
The coming days will be spent cleaning up with local shop owners and residents assessing and repairing any damages caused by the storm.
As predicted, moderate flooding of the Belubula River has occurred. Low lying river flats situated on the Belubula River are inundated with water and residents are asked to be mindful of the floodwater.
