The process lifts the restrictions and red tape imposed on recreational fossickers and according to Cabonne has the potential to develop and increase geo-tourism in the shire, as well as keeping Cabonne competitive with other fossicking declared locations in NSW.
Councils that have taken up this offer recently include Bathurst, Narrabri, Guyra, Walcha, Cootamundra-Gundagai and Upper Lachlan.
Under the declaration fossickers do not need permission of the holder of a mineral or petroleum exploration licence over the land in question but do stilll require permission from private and rural landholders.
