Nine competition points separate the Tigers and sixth placed Cargo while only one point is the difference between second placed Manildra and the Tigers in fourth.
A strong second-half and Grenfell playing with 12 men for the final 20 minutes helped the Tigers score victory in round 13 on Sunday at Tom Clyburn Oval.
The Tigers held an 18-16 lead at the break, thanks to three conversions by Matt Mclean after tries to Lachie Robinson, Tory Madden and Cal Clyburn for the Tigers and three tries to Grenfell.
Robinson’s second from the restart boosted Canowindra’s lead but the Goannas hit back soon after.
The two sides swapped tries again for the Tigers to lead 30-28, but the Tigers put two final tries on while Grenfell was down to 12 to record a 40-28 victory.
Best on ground for the Tigers was Nathan Whatman who received three points followed by Nick Willson with two points and Kain Earsman one point. Lachie Robinson and Nick Willson were recognised as the players’ player.
In the lower grades Canowindra’s league tag side was defeated 54-0 by Grenfell. Youth league had the bye.
This weekend on Sunday the Tigers take on the second placed Manildra Rhinos at Manildra.
