Despite remaining win-less Canowindra Tigers coaching staff are impressed with the performance of the side and too have been opposing coaches.

Cowra Magpies coach Rory Brien singled out backrower Wade Kinsela and the mercurial Pedro Tapim after last weekend's match.

"I think it's great to play the unknown," Brien said of the new competition.

"We're expanding our horizons a bit and they're coming up against different teams as well.

"It's good to see the talent in the bush, it's quite amazing how much good talent is running around.

"You come across some pretty handy footballers that we normally don't see. It's like a breath of fresh air," Brien said.

"It was a pretty scrappy game but rightfully so, you can't go error free in that sort of weather.

"Both teams were up for it, it was a good game.

"You could see (Canowindra) were right up for it, there defence was quite strong.

"We skipped ahead 14-0 at one stage but they just fought back.

"With a few (former) Cowra players over there it put a little bit of spice (into the match).

"It was a bit like a home town derby."

As for the Canowindra Tigers Brien was impressed with the efforts from Wade Kinsela and Pedro Tapim.

"Wade Kinsela was very strong he just kept coming at us," he said of the Canowindra backrower.

"Pedro was also very dangerous, a shining light, you never knew what he was going to do," Brien said.

Tapim was voted players player with Kinsela also receiving plenty of votes. Sam Frazer was again responsible for a consistent effort.

Sunday's win was the first outright win in the new competition for the Cowra side. They drew 12 all with the Wellington Cowboys in round one before defeats at the hands of Dubbo Macquarie and the Parkes Spacemen.

The Tigers have been beaten by the Mudgee Dragons, Wellington Cowboys and competition front runners Forbes Magpies.

Sunday's match against Cowra was played in very wet conditions which didn't assist either side with their handling.

As has been the case with most of their matches this season the Tigers started well and kept Cowra scoreless in the first quarter.

The Tigers surrendered a lot of possession, holding the Magpies out in the first 15 minutes before mistakes proved costly in the second quarter allowing Cowra to score a couple of soft tries before the Tigers hit back with Pedro Tapim using his skill to score next to the posts beating several defenders to get there.

His try was converted and the side's went into the main break with Cowra leading 14-6.

The message at half time was simple.

"Control the ball, play down Cowra's end and let the ball do the work".

The plan worked to perfection in the third quarter and the Tigers were rewarded when the Magpies failed to control a nice grubber kick behind the line which was pounced on for the Tigers to fight back to 14-12.

The Young Tigers were making inroads into the Cowra defence and playing with a lot more confidence, moving off their line much better, something the coaching staff have been calling for over the past month.

Cowra put a stop to the comeback hitting back late in the quarter to stretch their lead to six points before a try in the final quarter sealed the win for the Magpies.
