With Nathan Hoy in the gig Hardliner challenged Twisted Mistress early before the latter, courtesy of the inside draw, was able to secure the lead for the first lap, forcing Hoy and Hardliner to sit in the "death seat".
They maintained this position until the final 400 metres when the challenges came from the rear of the field.
Cowra club president Darryl Davis lead from the front for the local pacing fraternity at the meeting with Mendoza Lass, driven by Jack Wade, scoring an impressive win in the Grenfell Premium Cool Ladyship Pace over 1700 metres.
Sent to the mobile start as a $3.60 favourite, Mendoza Lass lead from start to finish, covering the 1700 metre journey in a time of 2.10, recording a mile rate of 2.03:1.
From gate 2 Wade pushed Mendoza Lass across to the rail with the pair then dictating the pace, covering the first quarter in 32.1 from another Cowra pacer in Milliondollarlil ($61) driven by Monique Parsons for Shannon Rye.
When the latter stumbled and broke on the final lap a chain reaction was caused through the field which allowed Mendoza Lass to set up a winning break.
Wade had enough in hand as he swung for home to take several looks over his shoulder and Mendoza Lass found a big kick to score her second career win at start 36.
Uroc Baby ($4.40), trained at Young by Rick Burnett and driven by Jessica Prior, finished second with Baby Bee Mine ($5,50) in third for Nathan Turnbull.
Veteran Young trainer driver Maurice Johnson started the day in perfect fashion with his seven year-old gelding McDreamy Guy.
Backing up after a win at Young on June 4 McDreamy Guy made a mockery of his long odds to record a four metre victory in the Grenfell Grain Mix Pace over 1700 metres.
Starting from the outside six draw on the front line McDreamy Guy was driven the perfect race by Johnson finding the one one before racing past race favourite I'm A Shy Guy in the home straight.
Royal Hot Shot (Nathan Turnbull) flashed late to grab third spot.
After the win Johnson said "he's come good at last".
"I had a bit of a problem with him, he had a fractured pedal bone and had six months off and he's come back good," Johnson said.
The Turnbull family dominated the meeting with Nathan and Amanda both finishing the day with winning doubles.
Nathan was in the winner's enclosure courtesy of Red Envy and Bomani ($8) while Amanda was successful with Meraviglia ($8) and Urus ($3.60). Not to be outdone Wendy Turnbull was successful with Lucky Nutter ($12).
